Description
This position will be responsible for managing the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the on-track Ultrasonic Rail Test vehicles.
Required Certifications: This position requires a CDL upon hire. You must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements: 1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
2. Have valid driver's license 3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
Medical Requirements:Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.
Accountabilities
- Understanding of ultrasonic non-destructive testing
- Operate a hy-rail vehicle on the track
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Inspect and maintain electronic equipment
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers, and effectively handle conflict situations
- Operate, inspect and perform light maintenance on a medium duty truck (26,000 to 33,000 GVWR)
Qualifications - Required
- Applicants must have reached the age of 21 or above.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Proficient verbal communication skills
- Able to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
- 1 or more years of experience operating hy-rail test equipment
- Able to become track qualified and pass required safety and rule compliance tests
- Ultrasonic Non-Destruction Testing Level 1 and Level 2 Certification
- Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents)

Physical and Mental Job Requirements
- Visual Ability: Must have normal color vision, enabling the detection and interpretation of various visual color signals and displays, as well as the ability to determine the speed of moving objects at both close and distant ranges.
- Walking: Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.
- Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Climbing: Frequently climb ladders to access detector cars using 3 point contact.
