Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a high-energy, hard-working intern to support the Risk Management team within the Law Department. The team supports incident response and handling efforts that help resume and maintain rail operations. This year-round internship provides hands-on experience in a fast-paced business environment at one of America’s leading transportation and logistics companies.
You will work with the Risk Management team and cross-functional partners to maintain investigation files, organize documents and electronic records, gather documentation for audits and external reporting, review and analyze data, identify process efficiencies, communicate with internal and external customers, and support the management of company assets in accordance with policies, operating procedures, and agreement terms. You will also gain exposure to Union Pacific business groups, processes, systems, and services while building professional relationships, interacting with leaders, and contributing to meaningful projects.
This position is intended for students who are actively pursuing a degree while attending a college or university within commuting distance of Omaha, Nebraska and are interested in gaining hands-on experience in Risk Management within Union Pacific's Law Department. During the academic year, this position offers a flexible schedule averaging 15-20 hours per week. Interns are expected to work primarily onsite at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, with some flexibility for remote work as approved by their manager. Interns are also expected to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer portion of the internship.
The estimated wage for this position is between $21.00-$25.00 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Accountabilities
- Learn and perform core Risk Management work, processes, and customer-service activities
- Maintain organized and complete investigation files and electronic records
- Complete case-file audits using established processes
- Gather and organize documents for audits and external reporting
- Review, analyze, and trend data to support team needs and identify process efficiencies
- Communicate with internal and external customers to obtain information and support Risk Management activities
- Support the management of company assets in accordance with policies, operating procedures, and agreement terms
- Develop and carry out project action plans and complete team assignments
- Provide operational and administrative support to Risk Management leaders and cross-functional partners
- Build professional relationships within the department and across the company
- Remain open and flexible to perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications - Required
- College credits equivalent to at least one year toward an undergraduate degree
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for working with internal and external customers
- Ability to organize detailed records and maintain accurate, complete documentation
- Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, follow established processes, and meet deadlines
- Ability to review information, identify relevant details, and support timely decisions
- Availability to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer and an average of 15–20 hours per week during the academic year, with flexibility around academic commitments
Qualifications - Preferred
- Pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Pre-Law, Risk Management, or a related field
- Coursework or experience involving risk management, compliance, audits, records management, investigations, business operations, or process improvement
- Experience reviewing, organizing, or maintaining detailed records, documentation, or case files
- Experience analyzing data, identifying trends, or supporting process improvements through coursework, employment, student organizations, or other activities
Physical Requirements
- This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
- Maintain concentration, focus on tasks, and make timely decisions
Work Conditions
