The Network Planning & Operations (NPO) intern will support key performance and planning initiatives across the Operating department. NPO oversees train scheduled and strategic planning for crews, locomotives, railcars, track, and terminals, as well as managing key performance indicators (KPIs) and evaluations. As part of the Equipment Distribution Team, you’ll support the effective deployment and management of equipment used across rail operations. You will assist with coordinating, tracking, and distributing equipment along with specific process improvement projects such as standardizing and streamlining the dirty car rejection verification and accessorial process and customer pool utilization and monitoring.

 

As an intern, you'll gain hands-on experience in data analytics and project management. You'll regularly collaborate with business partners and leadership, build self-service reports and visualizations, answer metric-related questions, and perform ad-hoc analyses to support decision making.

 

The position will be administered as a year-round internship at Union Pacific's headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. The work schedule is flexible and can be designed to accommodate the course commitments of the successful candidate. A flexible work schedule includes up to 40 hours per week available during the summer months and an average of 15–20 hours per week available during the academic year.

 

The estimated wage for this position is between $21.00-$24.00 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.   

Accountabilities

  • Learn and perform core business processes and systems used in Network Planning & Operations
  • Standardize and streamline the dirty car rejection verification and accessorial process
  • Customer pool utilization and monitoring process improvements
  • Provide operational support to department business group managers
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts within departments and across the company
  • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and special projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required

  • College credits equivalent to one (1) year or more toward an undergraduate degree
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills 
  • Intermediate organization, prioritization and time/project management skills

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a related field such as supply chain, operations management, marketing, accounting/finance, business intelligence/data 
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate various options and make decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintain concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions

Work Conditions

  • 18 years of age or older
