Description

As an intern, you will build knowledge and experience in our core business groups and their vision, business objectives, processes, systems, and services. You will have extensive contact with peers and interaction with senior leaders. There will also be an opportunity to put leadership, technical skills, and business knowledge to immediate use through high value project assignments.

 

We are seeking an analytical intern to join the Network Planning & Operations (NPO) department.  NPO manages the train schedules, tactical and strategic planning for crews, locomotives, railcars, track, and terminals, and the Operating department’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and evaluation. The Operations Evaluation team supports multiple audiences including Operating, Tech, Marketing & Sales, Finance, Law, executive leadership, and regulators. Team projects range from maintaining and developing metrics and reports, enterprise-wide strategic projects, regulatory reporting, recurring performance updates, and annual goal setting.

 

As an intern on the Operations Evaluation team, you will have the opportunity to learn, practice, and apply a variety of data analytics and project management skills. You will be in regular communication with business partners and leadership, while learning about Operating performance metrics, building self-service problem-solving reports and visualizations, answering metric questions, and completing ad-hoc analyses to inform decisions.

Accountabilities

  • Learn and perform core department business group work tasks, processes, and customer services
  •  Perform administrative support for department business group managers
  •  Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts within departments and across the company
  •  Assist with project management for various company initiatives and complete administrative tasks and special projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required

  • College credits equivalent to one year toward an undergraduate degree
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic organization, prioritization and time/project management skills

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field related to math, computer science, business analytics, finance, operations research, supply chain, data science, etc.
  • Willing to ask questions to improve understanding 
  • Critical thinker and problem-solver that can evaluate various options and make decisions
  • Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, SQL or Tableau/Power BI
  • Ability to communicate clearly, including summarizing and explaining difficult concepts
