The Environmental Management intern will support key projects focused on compliance, sustainability, and environmental data analytics. This includes assisting with air, water, and waste compliance efforts, contributing to sustainability and conservation initiatives, and supporting data reporting through tools like Tableau. Interns may also work with the Environmental Services & Technology team on analytics and visualization projects.

 

In addition to project support, the intern will collaborate with subject matter experts across various environmental disciplines, manage assigned projects from start to finish, and contribute to the team’s commitment to compliant and sustainable operations. The role involves regular interaction with team members and leadership, and offers opportunities to apply problem-solving, technical, and communication skills in a real-world setting.

 

As an intern, you will build knowledge and experience in our core business groups and their vision, business objectives, processes, systems, and services. You will have extensive contact with peers and interaction with senior leaders. There will also be an opportunity to put leadership, technical skills, and business knowledge to immediate use through high-value project assignments.

 

The position will be administered as a year-round internship at Union Pacific's headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. The work schedule is flexible and can be designed to accommodate the course commitments of the successful candidate. A flexible work schedule includes an average of 15–20 hours per week during the academic year, with up to 40 hours per week available during the summer months.

 

The estimated wage for this position is between $21-$24 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Accountabilities

  • Learn core business processes and systems within environmental operations
  • ​​​​​​​Assist with data analytics and reporting projects using tools like Tableau
  • Build self-service reports and visualizations to support decision-making
  • Provide operational support to department business group members
  • Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required

  • College credits equivalent to one (1) year or more toward an undergraduate degree
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate organization, prioritization and time/project management skills

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a related field such as business, environmental sciences, business analytics, finance, accounting, economics, computer or data science
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel and/or Tableau
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate various options and make decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintain concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions 

Work Conditions

  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
