Union Pacific's Engineering Department intern program enables talented students to experience the work environment of a Fortune 140 company while continuing their education. The year round internship is based on departmental needs and student interests.

 

  • Basic Accountabilities:
    • Learn and perform core department business group work tasks, processes, and customer services
    • Perform administrative support for department business group managers
    • Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
    • Build and strengthen a network of professional contact within departments and across the company
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and complete administrative tasks and special projects
    • Field Management Training: Assist with inspection, maintenance and repair of UP's track, signal and/or bridge infrastructure. Coordinate engineering activities with transportation operations. Assist with managing material and production costs, supervising work crews. Assist with day to day track, signal or bridge maintenance
    • Structures: Review and analyze minor structures, such as box culverts or retaining walls, using department-developed computer applications. Review shop drawings for conformance with design drawings. Check design drawings, confirming material take-offs, dimensions, etc

Description

As an intern, you will build knowledge and experience in our core business groups and their vision, business objectives, processes, systems, and services. You will have extensive contact with peers and interaction with senior leaders. There will also be an opportunity to put leadership, technical skills, and business knowledge to immediate use through high value project assignments.

Qualifications - Required

  • College credits equivalent to one year toward an undergraduate degree
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher
  • Basic time and project management skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic organization, prioritization and time/project management skills

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience with leading and managing people
  • College credit toward a Bachelor of Science degree focused on Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Management, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Supply Chain Management

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances
  • Must have normal color vision

Work Conditions

  • Willingness to work outside regardless of weather conditions
  • 18 years of age or older
