Union Pacific Law Clerks will be part of a comprehensive program that provides law students completing their first year of studies with the opportunity to intern with the in-house legal team at Union Pacific Railroad. Participants will receive firsthand experience collaborating with our legal team in areas such as transportation, intellectual property, commercial contracts, supply chain, regulatory matters, litigation, employment law, and other legal matters. In-house lawyers will provide managing and mentoring to participants with developmental feedback to help the Interns gain a better understanding of the unique role of an in-house law department at one of America’s leading transportation companies.
Description
Union Pacific Railroad Company’s Law Department is seeking as many as 3 summer law clerks. The law clerks will be assigned to the Law Department in Omaha, NE and will support the various legal areas within the department. The ideal candidate must have completed Legal Writing and Research, have strong research and writing skills, and have completed at least one year of law school by May 2024. Union Pacific is sourcing candidates nationwide. If the successful candidate is located outside of Omaha, NE, they will be expected to work in Omaha, NE during the summer months and will receive company paid housing during this time.
The law clerk will assist in-house lawyers with research projects and will be required to write legal memoranda, briefs, as well as prepare draft documents regarding a variety of legal issues with a primary focus on transactional law.
The position has the potential to transition to a year-round internship. The work schedule is flexible and can be designed to accommodate the course commitments of the successful candidate. A flexible work schedule includes up to 40 hours per week available during the summer months and an average of 15-20 hours per week available during the academic year. Positions are only available while the students are in school and do not guarantee full time employment upon completion of the internships.
Accountabilities
- Support attorneys on contractual drafting and review
- Support attorneys by providing statutory and regulatory interpretation and application
- Draft legal memoranda and pleadings
- Support attorneys in hearing or trial preparation
- Review work product and discovery documents to determine relevance to legal strategies
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications - Required
- Current enrollment in accredited law school
- Advanced communication skills
- Experience working/completing course work in Legal Research
