Union Pacific's Engineering Department intern program enables talented students to experience the work environment of a Fortune 140 company while continuing their education. Students gain insight into the U.S. transportation industry while working for an industry leader. Ideal candidates are interested in a field Engineering management career. The summer internship is based on departmental needs and student interests.

 

Interns will work full-time hours and may work outside of traditional business hours as needed. Interns will be expected to travel to their designated assignment and will travel frequently throughout the duration of the internship. Travel and accommodation expenses are covered by the company.

 

The estimated wage for this position is between $20-$26 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Accountabilities

  • Field Management Training: Assist with inspection, maintenance and repair of UP's track, signal and/or bridge infrastructure. Coordinate engineering activities with transportation operations. Assist with managing material and production costs, supervising work crews. Assist with day to day track, signal or bridge maintenance
  • Structures: Review and analyze minor structures, such as box culverts or retaining walls, using department-developed computer applications. Review shop drawings for conformance with design drawings. Check design drawings, confirming material take-offs, dimensions, etc
  • Construction: Exposure of structural, civil, and mechanical disciplines in the development of a typical project. Assist with direction of construction site activities to ensure work is in accordance with plans and specifications. Monitor distribution of work materials, project timeline and budget
  • Electrical-Signal: Assist on a project from design to implementation. This can include writing a specification, modifying an existing design, providing engineering assistance for modifications, and developing a test procedure to implement changes. Learn and work extensively with two types of basic hardware used with control systems in yards and be able to provide engineering assistance in adjustment and troubleshooting of this hardware using various types of test equipment. You may have the opportunity working with Positive Train Control (PTC) group setting up test equipment and developing testing procedures. May also gain exposure to wayside design, signal systems and processes. Projects are focused on developing a standardized knowledge base for the department 
  • Learn and perform core department business group work tasks, processes, and customer services
  • Perform administrative support for department business group managers
  • Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contact within departments and across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and complete administrative tasks and special projects

Qualifications - Required

  • College credits equivalent to one year toward an undergraduate degree
  • GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Basic time and project management skills 
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Basic organization AND prioritization skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills

  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintains concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions
