As a Track Laborer - Semi Truck Driver, you will play a crucial role in delivering materials to specified locations. Your responsibilities will encompass essential maintenance, repair, and installation tasks that ensure the secure and efficient movement of trains, serving customers across North America. Required Certifications: This position requires a CDL upon hire. You must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
2. Have valid driver's license
3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
Medical Requirements:Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safely perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.
Accountabilities
- Operate company vehicles, including semi-trucks equipped with cranes, and vehicles weighing six tons or more.
- Execute track maintenance, repair, and installation tasks, which involve maintaining track beds and replacing ballast as necessary.
- Conduct regular inspections of tracks (including beds and right-of-way) to identify and address potential issues or defects.
- Replace rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties, and other components as required.
- Utilize a spike maul to drive spikes into ties and a claw bar to remove them.
- Lift rails using a manual track jack to facilitate track adjustments.
- Assist in the unloading and movement of track materials and equipment from rail cars, carts, or trucks.
- Operate equipment for tasks such as digging holes and trenches.
- Maintain track beds by clearing vegetation, brush, and debris as needed, and ensuring movable track parts are free of dust or snow.
- Adhere to company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures to promote a safe working environment.
- Assume responsibility for driving company vehicles as required for job duties.
- Foster positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, customers, and handle any arising situations effectively.
- Ensure strict compliance with all railroad rules, regulations, safety guidelines, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards.
- Fulfill any additional duties as assigned by supervisors or management.
Qualifications - Required
- Applicants must have reached the age of 21 or above.
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or Class B
- 1 year(s) experience driving a semi-truck or truck that is six tons or more in weight
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
- Experience reading and understanding instructions (examples may include: operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents).

Qualifications - Preferred
- Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience in Railroad Maintenance of Way work.
- Proficiency in operating a truck equipped with a crane.
- Demonstrated experience in working within a construction-type environment. This experience can be gained through professional, personal, or volunteer engagements.
- Proven ability to thrive in outdoor work settings, including variable weather conditions, based on previous professional, personal, or volunteer experiences.
- Familiarity and proficiency in operating heavy equipment, such as construction and farm machinery, from either professional, personal, or volunteer experiences.
- Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate, obtained through professional, personal, or volunteer work.
- Flexibility to work on-call, overtime, various shifts, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays as required by the demands of the job.
Physical Requirements

- Physically Demanding Tasks: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 65 lbs, as well as push and pull objects up to 119 lbs.
- Standing: Must be capable of standing for extended periods during the workday, with the flexibility to change positions periodically for comfort.
- Walking: Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.
- Climbing: Must be able to climb ladders to access truck storage as necessary.

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Must agree to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, as required by the company.
- Transportation: Should have access to their own transportation.

- Working with Large Equipment: Should be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
- Remote Work Locations: The role may involve working in various rural and remote geographic areas.

- Travel: May require frequent travel or being on the road as needed.
