The Mechanical Department is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Locomotive Electrical Systems Engineer to support and enhance the performance, reliability, and safety of rotating electrical components across our locomotive fleet, including generators, traction motors, fans, and blowers. This position plays a key role in improving locomotive availability and operational efficiency for Union Pacific and the customers we serve.
In this role, the specialist will provide technical guidance to employees and management, assist with locomotive troubleshooting, and ensure clear communication regarding work plans, equipment status, productivity, and process improvements. The position also involves researching, developing, and implementing standards, technologies, and programs related to locomotive electrical systems.
Additionally, the specialist will offer recommendations to support compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and other applicable regulatory requirements. Collaboration with internal teams is essential to promote safe work practices and drive continuous improvement throughout the organization.
Accountabilities
- Ensure key process indicators (safety, reliability, quality and productivity) are met and improved
- Provide design, data analysis, research and testing for locomotives and components in an effort to improve life cycle cost
- Provide general help and troubleshooting assistance to Mechanical Locomotive System & Regional shops
- Assist the system repair shops to ensure all locomotives meet requirements for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and other regulatory agencies, and assist other Union Pacific departments, including the Law Department, to interpret and implement locomotive regulations
- Plan, direct and coordinate the locomotive maintenance planning, standards, programs and technology for Union Pacific's locomotive fleet
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
- Ensure craft work and facility business processes are done safely and to standard
- Maintain integrity in reporting, expenses and personal demeanor
- Solve problems when work or business processes cannot be done to standard
- Use eight-step problem solving process to improve shop processes by eliminating waste and variability
- Lead, develop and engage team leaders and craft employees
- Apply subject matter expertise to resolve the root cause of impactful train incidents with a focus on electrical subsystems

Qualifications - Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field with commensurate experience
- 1–5 years of relevant experience (internships or co-ops in transportation, manufacturing, or industrial sectors are a plus)
- Basic to intermediate understanding of electrical systems, rotating machinery, and control systems
- Familiarity with engineering analysis tools and techniques
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- Willingness to travel occasionally to field locations and locomotive shops
Qualifications - Preferred
- Experience with locomotive systems or heavy equipment
- Knowledge of FRA regulations and railroad industry standards
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, SQL)
- Exposure to reliability engineering or Six Sigma methodologies
- Hands-on experience with testing and diagnostics of electrical components
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
- Ability to solve problems when work or business processes deviate from standard
Physical and Mental Job Requirements
- Requires ability to get on and off locomotives

- Primarily office environment
- Approximately 30% travel

The final salary of the selected candidate for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, specialty and training. This position also includes additional compensation and benefits offered by Union Pacific.
This position is eligible for participation in the Union Pacific Annual Compensation Program.
