Description
Machinist works independently, possess skills necessary to fabricate complex mechanical components to exacting tolerances on manual type machines.
Accountabilities
- Disassemble equipment prepare for repair or remanufacture.
- Perform machine and tool set-up.
- Maintain clean work area, adjusts and sharpens tooling and machinery.
- Service all locomotives and support equipment to include sand, water, oil and fuel.
- Service all assigned Steam and Diesel Locomotives and support equipment including Rotary Snow Plow, Single and Double-track type Snow Plows and associated support equipment.
- Operates engine lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, shapers, drill presses, hydraulic presses.
- Operate tool sharpening fixtures and specialized tools and machinery as required.
- Work in tool room, clean and inventory tools and tooling.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/orcustomers and effectively handle conflict situations.
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Operate CNC engine lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, shapers, drill presses, hydraulic presses.
- Operate tool sharpening fixtures and specialized tools and machinery as required.
Qualifications - Required

- Proficient in English to effectively communicate with colleagues and supervisors.
- Capable of reading and interpreting blueprints.
- Must be able to travel up to several weeks at a time to support annual steam tour trips across Union Pacific's network and beyond, if needed.

- Capable of remaining in a standing or sitting position for more than half of the workday, with opportunities to periodically change positions for comfort.
- Frequently walk safely and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.
- Climb and maintain balance on ladders, stairs, or equipment as needed occasionally.
- Frequently perform physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Must be capable of performing regular coordinated hand movements for grasping, positioning, or moving objects.
- Lift, carry, or otherwise move weights up to 109 pounds occasionally.
Work Conditions
- Work will take place both in a shop environment and outside.
- Must be available to work any shift.
- Willingness to work outside regardless of weather conditions.

- Perform tasks at heights of 20 feet or more
- Crews generally work eight consecutive 10-hour days, followed by 5 to 7 days off before the next work period begins
- Travel is required 95-100% of the time
- Comfortable wearing personal protective gear for most of the day
- Must be willing and able to work in environments with large equipment, including railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
