Description

Senior Electronic Technicians are responsible for repair, maintenance and installation of VHF, UHF, and licensed microwave radio transmission systems. These systems support voice and data connectivity across Union Pacific Network, along with other IP-based technologies, to provide real-time data collection. Accountabilities

  •  
  • Maintain and repair telecommunications facilities in your territory.
  • Work independently or occasionally with another technician.
  • Maintain and repair mobile and base radios (155-162 MHz, 5-100 watts).
  • Work on terrestrial microwave systems (5.8 GHz, 6 GHz, 10-12 GHz, 18 GHz).
  • Handle SCADA radios (200, 400, and 900 MHz).
  • Service presence sensing equipment (loop detection, IR, sonar/acoustic).
  • Maintain routers, switches, access points, and IP video surveillance systems.
  • Perform maintenance on generators (2,000 to 17,000 watts) and rectifier systems (12, 24, 48V).
  • Maintain radio tower marking light systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair antenna and RF transmission lines.
  • Ensure RF surge suppression and grounding/bonding systems are functioning properly.
  • Utilize test equipment such as antenna analyzers, service monitors, spectrum analyzers, and power meters.
  • Diagnose issues with antennas and coax cables before involving tower climbers.
  • Provide support for internal customer devices.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Respond to service restoration calls, often due to weather-related damages.
  • Ensure critical equipment is repaired promptly to maintain train service.

 

Qualifications - Required

  • Basic computer skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
  • Able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
  • Able to assist and direct work of others
  • Able to communicate and work well both independently and with others
  • Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text
  • Able to plan, organize, and track information and activities
  • Able to understand and apply basic mechanical principles to solve mechanical problems

  • Travel Requirements: May be away from home five days per week.
