Background Investigation Policy

Our background investigation policy applies to all new hires, whether previously employed by the company or not, who have accepted a conditional job offer. Current employees who have accepted a conditional offer for a new position are not required to have a background check unless a specific check is required due to the responsibilities of the new position (e.g. valid driver’s license, commercial driver’s license (CDL), professional licenses or certifications).  Union Pacific has the right to change this policy at any time.

Union Pacific has a keen interest in the safety of its employees. The Background Investigation Policy establishes guidelines for a uniform and objective approach for considering your past record as part of the decision to offer employment. This investigation takes place after you have been offered a job, with employment contingent upon satisfactory results. Falsification of any information provided in the employment application is grounds for immediate dismissal.

Social Security Number VerificationApplicant’s name must correspond to their social security number and date of birth
Criminal HistoryA criminal background check will be conducted after an offer of employment is made. The results of that check will be individually assessed, based on the nature of the crime, the time that has passed, and the job applied for.
Employment History & VerificationPrior three year employment history and/or prior three employers, including military history, whichever covers the greater period of time, may be verified depending on the position you applied for. Persons applying to train service will have all prior railroad employment verified regardless of when the employment occurred.
Education VerificationAll attendance, degrees, and completion dates for education at the high school diploma/GED-level and above may be verified.
Professional License or Certification VerificationProfessional licenses and/or certifications considered to be relevant to the position for which you have applied may be verified.
Driver's License Record HistoryA motor vehicle report will be reviewed in instances where driving is an essential job function. Not having an acceptable driving record may result in the loss of job offer
Credit HistoryCredit history checks are limited to situations where there is a clear business necessity for the check (for example, if you are applying for a position that involves the handling or transferring of company funds). Previous seven-year history will be checked.
