How will I know when I have been cleared to work?
ANSWER: After completing all necessary pre-employment tasks (such as medical, drug, background checks, and PAT if applicable) and fulfilling all requirements in the onboarding portal, you will be cleared to start at Union Pacific and your status will be ""Pending Start Date Confirmation". To access pre-employment tasks, log into your UP.jobs account. For onboarding requirements, log into the onboarding portal. Once cleared, you will be contacted by Union Pacific regarding details of your first day. Until you have a confirmed start date and your status says "Welcome to Union Pacific", do not show up.
When may I give notice to my current employer?
ANSWER: It is advisable not to inform your current employer about your departure until you have obtained a confirmed start date or received instructions from Union Pacific. The status will say "Welcome to Union Pacific!".
My status says "Pending Start Date Confirmation", what does this mean?
ANSWER: A candidate is considered "Cleared to Start" once all pre-employment requirements, such as background investigation, medical evaluations, drug tests, and physical ability tests (if applicable), have been successfully completed. However, you are not confirmed start until your status says "Welcome to Union Pacific!".
What does it mean to be “You are cleared to start as an alternate”?
ANSWER: Being 'Cleared to Start Alternate" indicates that, due to recent changes in our business, we are unable to begin your employment in the position you accepted at this time. However, we still value your interest in joining the Union Pacific team, and if a vacancy becomes available in that position within the next 9 months, we will consider you as a potential candidate. During this period, we will keep you on our list of potential candidates and will reach out if a suitable opportunity arises. It is important to note that after nine months from your interview date, your alternate status will expire, and if you are still interested in working with Union Pacific, you will need to reapply.
