How do I apply?

The only way we accept applications is on our website. You can start by using the search jobs window on top of the page, or use the Military Skills Translator. Please note that you will need to apply for every job that you are interested in. Since we invite our applicants to hiring sessions/testing on a first come, first serve basis we recommend that you do not wait until the closing date.

Can I apply for multiple positions?

For every position that you are interested in, you will need to fill out an application. Remember, as soon as you see the job you are interested on our website, you need to apply for the position. We take our applications on a first come, first serve basis.

Can I still apply for a position and attend a hiring session even if I have not completed my tour of duty?

Yes, you can still apply. However, you cannot be offered a position that starts before your last day of active duty. We'll retain your application for up to six months for future openings.

How far out from my separation date should I apply for a position?

We can hold applications in our system for six months. In some cases, the need to fill positions may be immediate and the hiring session will take place within 30 days of your application being submitted. During the application process, you will have the ability to select the earliest date you would be available to interview.

How does the process work?

First, submit an application for the job or jobs you're interested in. Once the applications have been received and the posting closes, all of the applications are then screened for the most qualified applicants. After the screening process is completed, the most qualified applicants are either contacted to complete testing, invited to a hiring session or contacted for an individual interview. To stay current with your status, we recommend you check your applicant account center often.

How hard is the transition?

Lifestyles and working conditions are very similar between the military and the railroad. Many positions involve outdoor work with non-traditional working hours. Military personnel also tend to be flexible when it comes to relocation, which can be helpful in gaining familiarity with UP's 32,000-mile network, and in potentially advancing your career at the railroad.

How will my technical skills translate?

Many of the railroad's technical jobs, such as diesel locomotive mechanics and electricians, and freight car repairers, are well-suited for military members who have developed similar skills working with large Armed Forces equipment such as airplanes, ships, tanks and trucks.

What happens if I am a member of the National Guard or Reserves and am called to active duty?

Union Pacific is fully supportive of employees and their families who are called to active duty and will work to coordinate a smooth transition.
