Engineering Manager

Your people skills are as important as your engineering skills when you are an Engineering manager in our Operations Management Training program.

As a manager in the OMT program, you will:

  • Gain experience and competence in railroad operations
  • Be assigned to a piece of our vast system of infrastructure – our building, bridges, signal or part of our 32,000 miles of track
  • Develop first-line management skills to lead a diverse, unionized work crew
  • Receive extensive on-the-job and classroom training

If you have an electrical engineering degree or an electrical background, you can become a manager, signal maintenance, working on the signal lines built into our tracks. These electrical systems provide crucial safety and dispatching information to our trains.

If you have a structural engineering background, you can become a manager, bridge maintenance, working on the thousands of bridges and buildings in our 23-state system.

If you have a civil or structural engineering background, you can become a manager, track maintenance, responsible for hundreds of miles of track, the backbone of our railroad.

This is an exceptional first-line management opportunity with significant growth potential. Union Pacific operates a dynamic 24/7/365 operation focused on safety and customer service. This position will require you to work long hours in all weather conditions, including nights, weekends, holidays and on-call. Relocation will be required several times throughout your career.


We're looking for college graduates with degrees in engineering or science – especially electrical, structural, civil or construction engineering. We need people with strong social and communications skills. And we need problem-solvers who thrive in a fast-paced environment. Candidates will be required to take an operating management test.

Union Pacific's Operations Management Training program offers 4 classes each year - January, April, July and September.


Starting salary: $71,500 - $81,500*
At 6 Months: $3,500 increase**
At 12 months: $2,000 increase**
At Assignment: $87,300 - 96,600*

*Based on skills, experience and geographical location. Assignment made upon completion of the training program.

**Salary increase may vary based on performance, training and assignment schedule.


As an OMT, you will have 12 to 18 months of on-the-job training combined with formal classroom instruction. Here you will learn about Union Pacific's history and culture, and about how each area of Operations works. Your training will begin at our Omaha, Nebraska, headquarters and continue in a field assignment.

Your education will carry on long after you have left the formal training phase of the Operations Management program. Our employees are constantly challenged to learn new technology and new ways of thinking. Our Educational Assistance Program encourages full-time regular staff employees to take job-related courses during their non-work hours at accredited schools, colleges and universities. The program reimburses employees for 100 percent of tuition up to $5,250 a year.

Union Pacific also provides internal training programs and encourages employees to take advantage of these programs.
